Open Education is a global movement to promote knowledge sharing by improving access to curriculum materials. It often combines with efforts by Creative Commons to encourage copyright holders to share their creations and make copyright licenses clearer for users. Many universities in Colorado contribute to Open Educational Resources (OER) for PK-12 learners. UC Boulder sponsors the PhET Simulations, free online simulations for STEM concepts. They make their collections available under the Creative Commons CC BY 4.0 license, meaning all that is required to use the simulations is to credit PhET Interactive Simulations at the University of Colorado Boulder. UC Boulder also maintains climate education collections for CIRES and CLEAN under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike license CC BY-NC-SA 3.0. This license makes the resources free to use, share and repurpose but cannot be for commercial purposes and any derivative creations must also use the same Creative Commons licensing terms (share-alike). CSU Pueblo’s Natural Sciences Education & Outreach Center provides STEM education kits free for use that can be requested statewide, under their own licensing terms that permit educational use. These and other openly licensed educational resources help Colorado children learn through shared knowledge. Colorado teachers routinely search for free classroom resources, but may not realize there is an Open Education movement around this practice designed to make searching for and using free openly licensed resources easy. The OERColorado Project is bringing additional open education resources and collaboration tools to Colorado’s PK-12+ learning community through two public digital curriculum libraries. The OERColorado Hub is a satellite on the OER Commons library site; and a stand-alone Colorado focused Microsite OERColorado.org will open in April 2023. To celebrate Open Education Week, March 6-10, 2023, OERColorado is promoting a professional development video series (OEWeek Flier PNG) (OEWeek Flier PDF).
